元年，如今相国李公任吏部员外郎，韩愈曾和他一同上朝，路上说到幽州司徒公的贤能，说：“我前年被诏令告礼幽州，进入那地方，迎接慰劳的使者一里一里地到来，每次前进更加恭敬。到了郊外，司徒公红抹额、靴裤、握刀，左右杂佩，弓在弓袋中，箭插在箭筒里，俯身立在道路左边迎接。我以礼辞谢说：‘公，是天子的宰相，礼不可像这样。’到了府中，又穿着那身衣服办事。我又说：‘公，是三公，不可以穿着将服接受命令。’最终不能辞谢。上堂走客阶，座位一定朝东。”韩愈说：“国家失去太平，到现在六十年
