送殷員外序

唐朝接受天命做天子，凡是四方万国，不问海内外，无论大小，都臣服顺从于朝廷。按时节贡献水土百物，大的特地来，小的附集而来。元和睿圣文武皇帝继位后，完全治理天下使之合乎法度。十二年，下诏说：「四方万国，只有回鹘与唐最亲，奉职尤其谨慎。丞相要选宗室四品一人，持节前往赐给君长，告知朕的心意。再选学问有经法、通晓时事的人一人，作为副使。」因此殷侯侑从太常博士升任尚书虞部员外郎兼侍御史，穿朱衣执象笏，奉命出行。朝廷的大夫没有不出来饯行的。酒喝到一半，右庶子韩愈执杯说：「殷大夫：如今人们到几百里外，出门就惘惘然，有离别的可怜之色；带着被子入三省值班，叮咛嘱咐婢女，絮絮叨叨不能停。如今你出使万里之外的外国，却没有一丝一毫表现在言语面色上，难道不是真正知道轻重大丈夫吗！丞相让你应诏，真是了解人。士人不通经，果然不足以任用。」于是大家相继作诗，来送他出行。
