駮吏部尚書韋陟諡忠孝議

出仕与居家侍亲的事本就不相同，忠与孝不能同时兼备。已经是孝子，就不能做忠臣；已经是忠臣，就不能做孝子。所以要从孝中求忠，怎能先顾父母而后顾君主；把孝移作忠，就要出身侍奉君主。因此扬鞭驱车而前进，不畏惧危险，所以王尊是忠臣；想着保全自身而回归，恐怕身体有所毁伤，所以王阳是孝子。由此可知白昼与黑夜，本就不相随；春天与秋天，怎能算同一天？况且认为尚书志向功业高远，为前朝的表率，百行之中，能做的事很多。评议德行定谥号，本来就有很多美名，何必忠孝两者并加，然后才彰显德行？遍考前代史书，恐怕没有这样的事，斗胆陈述愚见，请再商量。
